PHILADELPHIA — Purdue basketball No. 1 will take on Penn State on Sunday in historic Palestra. The Boilermakers are looking to remain undefeated on the road in Big Ten matchups after earning a 71-69 win in state No. 24 Ohio.

Get to know the trainers
Matt Painter, Purdue: Painter is in his 18th season as Purdue Basketball’s head coach. He owns an overall record of 398-193 with the program, including a 197-116 mark in the Big Ten. With just two more wins, Painter may become only the fifth coach in Big Ten history with 400 career wins in a conference school, where he joins Bob Knight, Tom Izzo, Gene Keady and Lou Henson.
Painter began his career as a head coach in Southern Illinois, where he led the team to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference in the 2003-04 season with a 25-5 aggregate record and losing just one game in league games.
Micah Shrewsberry, Penn State: Shrewsberry is in his second season at the helm of the Nittany Lions and has an overall record of 24-20 with the program. After his playing career at Hannover College, he was an assistant coach at Wabash and DePauw before joining Marshall’s coaching staff as director of basketball operations.
In 2005, Shrewsberry accepted a position as head coach at IU South Bend and later joined Butler as an assistant to help the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Championship Game back-to-back seasons. He came to Purdue in 2011 for the first of two stints with the program. He spent seven seasons as an assistant with the Boston Celtics before returning to the Boilermakers from 2019-2021. On March 15, 2021, Shrewsberry was named Penn State’s 14th head coach.
