Give patients healthcare provider choice and access

INDIANAPOLIS, November 16, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Today, groups from across the state announced the launch of Hoosiers for Health Care Access (HHCA), a coalition representing 10 Indiana patient, business, faith and community organizations. In an open letter, the group called on the Indiana General Assembly and Gov. Holcomb to provide patients with greater access to quality health care delivered by the provider of their choice. The Indiana Chamber, AARP Indiana, Americans for ProsperityIndianathe Coalition of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Indianathe Convenience Care Association, the Indiana Minority Health Coalition, Purdue University NW College of Nursing, INhouse Primary Care, Rounding Providers and Sojourner Truth House signed the open letter.

“Across the state, our organizations provide health care, conduct business, create jobs and our economy, and represent Hoosiers by empowering them to choose how they live in old age, which is good for the health of our state and all of its citizens,” the statement said Writing, “Today is more than 2 million Indiana Residents live in nationwide designated shortage areas for basic services. Along with these Hoosiers, another 4.7 million residents have no access to mental health care. As a result, millions of our neighbors lack adequate access to medical care. And as if that wasn’t enough, 33 out of 92 counties Indiana are classified as obstetric deserts, meaning women in nearly 40% of our state do not have access to vital health services or do not have a hospital with labor and delivery capacities. We believe Indiana can and must do better to protect the health of our state and our families. Our businesses cannot attract and retain a healthy workforce without adequate access to health care, and we can no longer accept policies that exclude rural and underserved communities from equal access to health care in their own communities. For the past two years, the public health emergency has temporarily allowed patients a greater choice of healthcare services through direct access to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). We cannot turn back now. With the suspension of the governor’s executive order expiring earlier this year, the General Assembly must act quickly to pass legislation in the 2023 session to make this access permanent. There are 26 states that District of Columbia, and the VA Health Care System, which gives patients full and direct access to the comprehensive care that APRNs deliver in one billion patient visits nationwide each year. It is time for Indiana join you. We, the undersigned organizations, urge you to set priorities Indiana patients and waive full power of attorney in this legislative period. We are willing to work with you to build a healthy future Indiana where every citizen has access to the healthcare they deserve, delivered by the provider of their choice.”
