On a recent weekend, a national media outlet sent a news push notification to my phone that threw me for a loop, so I clicked on it to read it.
According to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association in CNN coverage, the cost of heating a home has risen 18% nationwide, on top of a 17% increase over the last year.
The situation has gotten so bad, the report said, that some families are not heating their homes.
I knew inflation was bad, the worst of my adult life, but the idea of turning off my heating in the winter because it’s too expensive? It’s a dilemma that many of us have probably never faced before. But the truth is, times are so tough, and people are making that choice.
At IndyStar, we do not want the families and children of central Indiana to make a choice that sacrifices a basic need – just warmth in their own home – for the cost of living.
Our neighbors didn’t deserve that. I need your help to keep that from happening.
IndyStar is launching its annual Season for Sharing campaign so the news organization, with the help of our readers like you, can alleviate the burdens our economy has placed on many central Indiana families. The donation period begins with Thanksgiving and ends on December 31st.
Now held as part of IndyStar’s Our Children initiative, the mission of the annual Season for Sharing campaign is to harness the power of journalism and our reach as a newsroom to make a difference for youth in central Indiana . Since 1994, we’ve collectively raised more than $2 million.

This is one of my favorite IndyStar campaigns as it has a direct impact on our neighbors and the well-being of the next generation.
This year grants will go to organizations that have gone above and beyond in supporting youth organizations in central Indiana, particularly in Marion County. Because of the generosity of our donors, we have awarded $150,000 to support Black and Brown youth and families in 2020 and $120,000 in 2021 to support families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Please donate. The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust generously matches donations up to $25,000.
Giving something back helps. With your tax-deductible contribution you help to change lives.
I appreciate you working with us to make Indianapolis a better place.
