COPPELL, Texas — The Coppell Cowgirls continued their district role with a 56-42 win over the Lewisville Lady Farmers Tuesday night, thanks in large part to the play of Indiana Hoosiers-signed Jules LaMendola.
The 6-foot-1 senior guard scored 23 points in the district win, including 15 in the second half alone.
Macey Mercer started the goal for Coppell with a 3-pointer just seconds into the game before LaMendola dumped a follow-up bucket to make it 5-0.
Lewisville struggled to get things going early on, only managing to get a point in the opening minutes of the contest. Then, with time up in the first quarter, Lady Farmer senior Mya Dotson nailed a 3-pointer from half court to make the score 15-4 after a quarter of play.
Although the Cowgirls had dominated the first quarter, Lewisville took control in the second. Just 2 minutes later, Aaliyah scored Scott in a corner-3 to set off a 12-point run that resulted in a 20-19 lead for Lady Farmer.
But before halftime was over, LaMendola and Waverly Hassman combined to take the lead for Coppell with a 24-20 score going into the break.
Hassman played an important role for the Cowgirls, scoring 17 points in the win.
Both teams continued to play evenly at the beginning of the second half. After 4 minutes of play in the half, Coppell’s lead was 33-26.
Then the cowgirls found their spark.
Without touching the ball, LaMendola was fouled twice and then drove hard into the lane and sank a bucket while being fouled again, then capitalized at the free throw line to complete the three-point game and start the fire.
Hassman also scored six points in the third quarter to give Coppell a double-digit lead. It was 41-28 in the last frame.
The Cowgirls began handing the ball around in the fourth quarter when five different players scored in the last 8 minutes. Despite Lewisville scoring 14 points in the quarter, Coppell was able to hold onto his lead and drive to a 56-42 win.
The win puts the Cowgirls up to 30-2 (9-1) this year as they continue a five-game winning streak before heading into their next match against Flower Mound (24-5, 7-3) at 6:15 p.m. go Friday, January 27th, in Flower Mound.
The Lady Farmers fell to 13-14 overall (3-7) with the loss and will look to recover against Plano East (15-9, 6-4) on Friday night at 7pm in Plano.
