No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan Football beats Avila to secure the program’s first postseason win

Marion, Ind. – No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan Football prevailed 14-7 in the first round of the 2022 NAIA Football Championship Series at No. 13 Avila University on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats celebrated their 10th win of the season and the program’s first postseason win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • IWU scored all of their points in the first half and relied on their defense to get them through.
  • That defense held one of the best rushing offenses in the country at just 133 yards on the ground.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Both teams got off to a slow start with a 3-and-out drive to start the game.
  • Dederrian Williams gave the Wildcats their first big game with a 31-yard run over the 2-yard line. Xander Stokes found Charlie Hill back in the endzone to give IWU the only result of the 1st Quarter

SECOND QUARTER

  • The IWU defense got the 2nd quarter going by forcing the Eagles into a turnover on downs.
  • A 25 yard link from Stokes to Levi Tidwell Place the Wildcats within the 10th Dederrian Williams hit it from 5 yards for his 13th total of the season and added another program record to his resume.
  • Malik Nesbitt single-handedly led the Eagles offense, recording 8 rushes and 3 receptions for 54 yards and giving Avila their first touchdown of the game.
  • IWU went into the dressing room with a 14-7 lead at halftime, with both teams totaling under 135 yards in the first half.

THIRD QUARTER

  • The second half started the same way as the first half, with each team sticking to 3 and out-drives.
  • The Avila offense went into the red zone with 7 plays and 88 yards, which took more than 7 minutes to complete. An open field tackle by Daniel Schaeger On the 4th down, the Eagles flipped on downs at 4:13 in the quarter.
  • With no goals in the 3rd quarter, the Wildcats held onto a 14-7 lead.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • The IWU offense found spark to start 4th with 22 rushing yards from Williams, but a missed field goal attempt kept the score at 14-7.
  • IWU continued to use Williams in running play throughout the quarter as time continued to tick.
  • An interception by Owen Perkins on Avila’s final drive sealed the game 14-7 and gave the Wildcats their first playoff win in program history.

TURNING POINT
  • The Eagles moved aggressively in the second half with running play, but the IWU’s stellar defense made key stops to prevent a comeback.

WHAT WIN MEANS
  • The Wildcats survive and advance to the Quarterfinals of the 2022 NAIA Football Championship Series next Saturday.

IMPORTANT STATISTICS

  • On offense, Stokes completed 11 of 20 through the air with a touchdown pass, bringing his single-season record to 24 touchdowns this season.
  • Williams rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown and broke another program record with his 13th of the year.
  • A limited offensive attack through the air was carried out Jacques Carter with 4 receptions for 27 yards.
  • Defensive, Devin Bacchus led the team with a total of 8 tackles while also forcing a fumble and interrupting a pass.
  • Gardy Paul, Isaac Abeoand Ryan Wolford everyone had sacks in the win.

  • Dederrian Williams was named Offensive Player of the Game after rushing for 178 yards and a touchdown.
  • Devin Bacchus was named Defensive Player of the Game after leading the IWU with 8 tackles, a forced fumble and a broken pass.
