The surge in the second half pushes Purdue past Indiana State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.Del’Janae Williams had a game-high 18 points Sunday afternoon, but a long Purdue run through the last two quarters gave the Boilermakers a 77-54 win over Indiana State at Mackey Arena.

Natalia Lalic added eight points from the bench during Adrian people had six. Anna McKendree had five points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals for the Sycamores.

Indiana State gave Purdue fits during the first half and took the lead late in the first quarter. The Sycamores led by as much as four early in the second, but a Boilermaker run gave Purdue a lead it never gave up. A 31-7 Purdue run spanning all of the third and part of the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.

First half

Purdue scored the first five points and led for the opening period of the first quarter. A couple Chelsea Cain Baskets on consecutive possession made it a 9-8 game and Natalia Lalic later, the Sycamores took the lead with a contested layup. In a neighborhood that went back and forth Bella Finnegan hit a 3-pointer from the corner to give Indiana State a 21-18 lead in the last minute. The Sycamores went into the second round with a narrow 21:20 lead.

Del’Janae Williams got the Sycamores rolling in the second quarter with a 3-pointer from the outside lane and Florence Tshimanga added a layup to give the ISU a four-lead 26-22. Williams added a layup midway through the quarter to take it 28-25 in favor of the blue-and-whites, but Purdue continued a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead. Another 3-pointer from Williams, this time in the last minute, put them 35-31 down at the break.

Second half

Purdue opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Lalic hit a 3-pointer in the transition to reduce the deficit to 45-34, but the Boilermakers responded with a 3-pointer of their own. Points were hard to come by for Indiana State in the third quarter as the Sycamores only made three shots. Purdue capitalized on Indiana State’s hard shooting in the quarter and built a 56-38 lead after three.

Another 10-0 run, this time early in the fourth quarter, gave Purdue a 66-38 lead. Williams hit a 3-pointer for the Sycamores, but Purdue hit a 7-0 run to give the Boilermakers their biggest lead, 73-41. Consecutive 3-pointers from Williams and Lalic reduced the deficit, and Williams added another 3-pointer to take it to 75-52 late in the quarter. Adrian people and Williams hit two free throws each in the closing minutes, but by this time Purdue had bagged the win, beating the Sycamores 77-54.

In the numbers

  • Indiana State finished the rebound fight in a tie with Purdue (35-35), with 12 of the Trees’ 35 boards coming on the offensive glass.
  • Indiana State was 23 points short of 18 Purdue turnovers. The 18 turnovers were Purdue’s most this season.
  • Del’Janae Williams scored her third straight game in double figures to open the season.

  • Adrian people scored her first points since returning from injury at the end of the 2021-22 season. The people finished with six points.
  • Florence Tshimanga made her season debut on Sunday, finishing with four points in eight minutes
  • Sunday’s game was one of only two non-conference road games for the Sycamores this season (in Western Michigan, Dec. 10).
