Activists are calling for action to make abortion a constitutional right in New Mexico

“The fall of Roe v. Wade was devastating, but it’s critical to act now before further anti-abortion action is pushed forward,” said Candice Yanez.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation, a local activist group, rallied in Albuquerque on Sunday demanding action to make abortion a constitutional right nationwide. “Right now nothing is stopping the Democratic Party and they won a major victory to stand up for women’s rights and make abortion a constitutional right. So we must not waste time because right-wing forces do not waste time,” said Candice Yanez, an organizer of the Socialism and Liberation Party. Yanez believes it’s one step closer to hearing their voices ahead of the 2023 legislative session. “Abortion rights are basic, basic human rights, basic democratic rights. The attack on abortion is really an attack on our democratic rights,” she said. “So if we fight for abortion and have abortion rights, we also know that we are expanding our democratic rights, and we must do everything in our power to stand up and fight back.” By making abortion a constitutional right, Yanez believes, that it will secure abortion rights nationwide. “We know that if it were put to the vote now, the majority of New Mexicans would vote for it, and it would happen. So you can see what happened in California, Vermont and Michigan. Even in Kentucky, people voted against the Anti-Abortion Ordinance. The vast majority of Americans in the vast majority of New Mexico support abortion rights and support women’s rights,” she said. “I’m proud that we have New Mexico as a legal right, but we know that women from Texas and Arizona are coming in. So it’s not enough that it’s legal and it’s still not a constitutional right because their lives are at stake “Ethel Mahaarg, Executive Director of the Right to Life Committee of New Mexico disagrees. “It does no point in wanting to pass legislation to keep killing babies. There are options other than abortion,” Mahag said. “There’s adoption, there’s parenthood. There are a lot of resources and I’ve worked with a lot of the organizations that we work with to make sure people understand that abortion is not the only option for them. People in communities have the right to say, “No, we don’t want that in our backyard.” made to ensure that New Mexico remains a safe haven for abortion and reproductive rights and are committed to continuing this fight As recent election results have shown, New Mexico’s leaders who advocate for access to abortion and reproductive rights want deploy.”

The New Mexico Democratic Party sent KOAT a statement:

“New Mexico Democrats have already taken major strides to ensure New Mexico remains a safe haven for abortion and reproductive rights and are committed to continuing that fight. As the recent election results have shown, New Mexico’s pro-abortion access and reproductive rights leaders want it.”
