opening tip

Jody Adams and her team earned a narrow overtime victory at home last week as the Aggies beat rivals New Mexico 73-64 (OT). This is the second time this early season that the Aggies have made the mile-long trip to the Rockies — the team opened the 2022-23 season in Boulder, Colorado (Nov. 7) against the University of Colorado.

The Bulldogs come to Denver on a three-game winning streak, recently defeating Fairfield (68-61), Army (71-66) and Maine (55-46).

The Pioneers came off a 23-point loss to Wyoming last Friday (68-45). Freshman guard Emma Smith led the team that night with 14 points and went out with two threes 4-6.

Messages and Notes

Exploring the Bulldogs

Before their three-game winning streak, Yale lost their first two games of the season (both away) to Fordham (80-67) and Saint Josheph’s (59-54). Jenna Clark is the only Bulldog to start all five games this season. She is currently second on the team in scoring averaging 11.6 ppg. – Elles van der Maas leads the team with 13.3 ppg.

Exploring the Pioneers

Denver is still recovering from a 23-point loss inflicted on them by Wyoming last Friday. Their only win came against Loyola Marymount in an overtime game that saw the Pioneers slip away with a three-point win (70-73). Emma Smith leads the team with 12.7 points despite missing a game this season.

participation

NM State leads WAC in average attendance through the young season. With 1,394 people at the Pan American Center last Wednesday, the Aggies edge out Abilene Christian (1,310) and Utah Tech (1,308) for the highest average attendance.

Inoussa period

Quickly drop the hits Sofia Inoussa leads NM State in scoring with 12.0 points per game. Inoussa dropped 15 points in the season opener in Colorado, going 5-11 with three triples. Against New Mexico, she went 6-12 from the field and racked up 14 points, including two triples.

coaching staff

The entire NM State coaching staff is new for the 2022-23 season. Adams brought in Patrick Harrison, Chynna Turner and Zach Banks as assistant coaches for their first staff at Las Cruces.

Harrison joins NM State from Kansas City, where he spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach under Jacie Hoyt, the current head coach of Oklahoma State.

Turner played for Adams at Wichita State before entering the world of coaching. Before coming to NM State, Turner spent four seasons with Gardner-Webb and led the Bulldogs to 61 victories.

Banks joins the Aggies after serving as an assistant at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida. Banks’ stint in Florida was capped with a 2021 NJCCA National Championship and a career record 128-22 (.853).

Hard tests ahead

The Test with Colorado won’t be the last time NM State meets a 2022 NCAA Tournament opponent this season. The Aggies will also go head-to-head with Stephen. F. Austin (12th; lost to North Carolina) on Feb. 28 and welcomes WAC new signing UT Arlington (14th; lost to Iowa State) on Feb. 23.

street fighter

The game against Yale is the first of six away games the Aggies will play outside of the Pan American Center. After their two-game streak with Yale and Denver, NM State returns to the Borderland to face UTEP (Nov. 30) at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso. From there, NM State travels to sunny San Diego for the San Diego Classic (Dec. 3/4 against San Diego/Idaho) and finishes the road swing on December 11 in New Mexico.

last time out

The Aggies snuck past their rival New Mexico in overtime last week, beating the Lobos 73-64. The Aggies dominated the first three quarters of the game. They ended the first quarter on a 20-2 run and eventually took a 28-point lead just before the final period.

Some sloppy plays and turnovers allowed the Lobos to stage a respectable comeback in the fourth quarter. UNM surpassed NM State 30-13 in the final period to force overtime.

Despite a nearly 30-point lead, the Aggies were able to keep their composure and walk away with a win after shooting 62.5% from the field in overtime, including two three-pointers.

Three Aggies found themselves in double digits – Sofia Inoussa (14), Molly Kaiser (12) and Fama Thiam (10) each scored double-digit points.

Next

The Aggies will return to the Frontier region for a quick game against I-10 rivals UTEP. After that, the Aggies are back on the road, traveling to San Diego, California for the San Diego Classic where they will face off against San Diego and Idaho.
