History will recognize O’Rourke and Abrams as pioneers

I have lived in Georgia for over 10 years. Two of my children were born there. The eldest was born in Florida and spent much of her childhood and early teens there. We’re talking the South, even in the ’90s and early 2000s, where Al Gore and John Kerry brought in the middle finger as presidential bumper stickers.

Now look at Georgia, with two great people’s senators, one Jewish and one black man. It’s still not where some would like it to be, but it’s a testament to democracy. What does this have to do with El Paso? Well, I believe that people like Beto O’Rourke or Stacey Abrams, who may not be perfect or whose policies are not perfectly aligned with yours, are heroes and pioneers. They stake everything (money, reputation, privacy, family time, and even health) in their true desire to make things better for their community, their state, and humanity in general.

Such men and women deserve credit for their sacrifice and noble intentions. I have no doubts that history will recognize her for her defining mark. Beto, Stacy: ¡Salud!

Thank a family caregiver

In 2011, former First Lady Rosalyn Carter told the Senate Special Committee on Aging, “There are only four types of people in the world — those who have been caregivers, those who are current caregivers, those who will be caregivers , and those who need a caregiver”.

November is Family Caregiver Month to honor the nearly 53 million people who care for family, friends and neighbors. If you provide support such as running errands, grocery shopping, wound care, medication management, cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene at home, you are a caregiver. This unsung, sometimes self-sacrificing workforce provides an estimated $470 billion in services annually. Family caregivers are the backbone of home care in our country. Without them, our country is unable to take care of our elderly and people with disabilities.

Let’s say a thunderous thank you!
