Las Cruces City Council elects a new City Court Judge

LAS CRUCES — The Las Cruces City Council appointed a new judge for the county court after a previous judge was invalidated.

On Monday, the council appointed Jessica Streeter, a district court judge, to replace Kieran Ryan. Streeter was appointed to the 3rd Judicial District Court by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in 2021 to fill a vacancy. Her tenure in the district court ends this year after Streeter lost a primary last June.

Streeter’s appointment to the magistrate’s court comes after months of contention that eventually led to a court showdown last October. At the time, a judge voided Ryan’s appointment.

The judge said state law directed the city to follow an ordinance requiring city judges to be in good standing with the New Mexico State Bar Association.
