One person died after being shot by New Mexico State Police

New Mexico State Police are investigating after officers from their own department shot dead a suspect in northeast Albuquerque. The incident began Wednesday night with a traffic delay near Montgomery Boulevard and Louisiana Boulevard. When the state police officer contacted the driver during the traffic stop, the officer noticed knives and drug paraphernalia in the car. State police say the officer who arranged the traffic stop was a CIT (crisis intervention team) officer and began communicating with the driver. After several hours, state police say the driver took an illegal drug and then drove his car into an NMSP unit and fled down Louisiana Boulevard. Shortly after the escape, the driver fell while attempting to turn into a parking lot near the intersection. After the accident, the driver barricaded himself inside the vehicle and SWAT officers were called. SWAT officers began communicating with the driver. During the incident, state police said, the driver exited the vehicle with a machete. At the time, state police officers attempted to use bean bags against the driver. After these bean bags were deployed, two officers fired their service rifles, killing the driver of the car. The intersection of Louisiana Boulevard and Montgomery Boulevard will be closed while a multi-agency task force investigates the incident.
