The new book focuses on Fredericksburg’s thriving food and drink scene

MArk Twain once said, “Find a job you love and you won’t have to work a day in your life.”

That pretty much sums up Jane Ko’s life over the last 10 years.

The Port Lavaca native is the one-woman dynamo behind A Taste of Koko on Instagram, where she gets to do something most people can only dream of: eat, drink and travel, and then eat and drink and travel more to make their day to earn a living.

Her days are long and Coco is always on the go. She has boundless energy and does everything with a sense of grand style, and she’s great fun.

Along the way, Koko has grown into one of the most prolific social media influencers in south-central Texas.

Her more than 146,000 Instagram followers (and growing every week) discover new restaurants, the coolest places to be, and insights into where to stay and things to do in south-central Texas, as well as Los Angeles, Chicago, Colorado and New Mexico.

A Taste of Koko was an affair of the heart.

Popular social media influencer Jane Ko just released A Guide to Fredericksburg, a pocket-sized book that details where to eat, drink, and things to do in Fredericksburg.

In 2010, Ko was studying to be a nutritionist at the University of Texas when she realized a 9-5 job wasn’t her cup of tea. So she dropped the textbooks and started blogging and writing restaurant reviews.

“Growing up in a small town in South Texas, I didn’t grow up eating at nice restaurants or in a strong community. When I started blogging, I didn’t know anything about photography, writing, social media or running a website, but I’ve learned things over time,” she says.

Fast forward to 2023, and Koko counts thousands of Austin and Hill Country shops, restaurants, and bars to share with her followers. She admits that “working 70 to 80 hours a week hasn’t been easy for the past decade,” but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

A Taste of Koko has twice been voted Best Local Austin Blogger and she has been featured in numerous publications including O and InStyle magazines and The New York Times.

While her travels have taken her across the United States, Ko has a special fondness for the Texas Hill Country.

“I first came to Fredericksburg in 2015 and fell in love with the small German town.”

The area is so special that Ko decided to launch a pocket-sized travel guide to Fredericksburg earlier this month. She’s also become a partner in an Airbnb near Main Street.

Koko’s Guide to Fredericksburg is her second book and the first, Koko’s Guide to Austin, was the #1 Texan Book Best Seller on Amazon. She calls the new book “the ultimate guide to local restaurants, shops and wineries in Fredericksburg.”

Her involvement with Sunday Haus Estate, her Airbnb, came about because she had shared so many glamping experiences in the Hill Country over the years and people were asking for more weekend getaways and getaways.

“We took it over in January and completely renovated it and only reopened in November.”

Another of Coco’s favorites in the Hill Country is the Gruene River Inn in New Braunfels. The 14-room hotel sits on a cliff and has beautiful Hill Country views, she said.

With Hill Country growing, dozens of wineries are slated to open over the next year, and it won’t come as a surprise to see Koko exploring the area.

And if you see her, don’t be afraid to take a selfie with her because when her mom is with her, she will take pictures of you taking pictures with Koko.
