CANYON, Texas- West Texas A&M head coach Matt Vanderburg has announced the addition of Elijah Batista, Kyle Micklus, Tristin Thomas and Chase Weaver for the 2024 campaign as the first four members of WT’s signing class.
The Buffaloes open their 2023 campaign February 3-5 in Laredo, Texas when they face the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in a Lone Star Conference series at Haynes Field.
Infielder – El Paso, Texas
Eastlake High School – Western Texas College
Batista joins Canyon from Western Texas College in Snyder, where he will graduate with an Associate of Kinesiology degree next spring. The shortstop came on in 19 games for the Westerners last season, hitting .257 with a pair of doubles to drive in four RBI for a .314 slugging percentage.
He graduated from Eastlake High School in El Paso in 2021, where he served as a second-team all-district select for the Falcons under head coach Marc Herrera. Elijah is the son of Andres and Lorena Batista and he has three siblings: RJ, Sophia and Leah. He is expected to study kinesiology at West Texas A&M.
Catcher – Waller, Texas
Waller High School-Lassen Community College
Micklus will begin his second season at Lassen Community College in Susanville, Calif., next spring when he was selected for the 2022 Cougars under head coach Frank Avilla as a second team all-state and first team all-conference. The Cougars went 29-16 with one run into the Super Regionals last season when Micklus hit .363 with 11 doubles and 25 RBI for a .452 slugging percentage.
A native of Waller, Texas, the 2020 graduate of Waller High School where he worked behind the plate for the Bulldogs under head coach Rodney Loewe. Kyle is the son of Jeriann Frazier and he has one brother, Jared. He is expected to major in psychology at WT.
Outfielder/Pitcher – Carlsbad, New Mexico

Thomas comes to Canyon from Carlsbad High School, where he was an All-State and All-District selection for the Cavemen during the 2022 campaign under head coach Cody May. The two-way threat plays in midfield at CHS while also throwing from the left flank.
Tristin is the son of Roy Thomas and Francis Murray and has three siblings: Nolan, Spencer and Nathan. He is expected to start studying business administration at West Texas A&M next fall.
Hamilton High School
Weaver comes to the Buffs from Hamilton High School, where he was the first All-State team for the Bulldogs under head coach Jeff Timmons in 2022 and led Class 2A at Texas State with 145 strikeouts as a junior to make the District 7-2A Most Valuable players to be nominated. He also excels in teaching as an Academic All-District Honoree and a member of the National Honor Society.
Chase is the son of Larry and Julie Weaver and he has one brother, Austin. He is expected to study agribusiness at West Texas A&M.
