Your first time can be scary. Especially if it used to be illegal!
New Mexico became the 18th state to legalize recreational marijuana use in 2021, but many haven’t made it to a dispensary yet. Very little is known about pharmacies as they exist in most states right now – so what’s up?
This article aims to help put your nerves at ease and give you some upfront information so you can feel more prepared before you embark on your first green shopping spree. Also, I’ve added some great New Mexico pharmacies perfect for newcomers at the end of the article.
The important things first. Some very important memories.
It is LEGAL to use recreational marijuana in the state of New Mexico, even if you reside in a different state.
It is ILLEGAL to cross state lines with marijuana.
It is also ILLEGAL in Texas for use of any kind. Medicinal or recreational.
And on that note, back to business. The cannibis business.
What to bring… You will need a valid ID. Preferably a driver’s license. Cash is always a good choice when it comes to pharmacies because although some only accept debit cards, there is usually a fee.
When you get there, you will most likely enter through a first set of doors. Some have security right up front, which is perfectly normal. Don’t be alarmed because there is a policeman there. It’s legal and you’re not doing anything wrong.
Once you make it through the first few doors and show your ID, you can either go straight to the counter or stand in line. There are usually chairs, and you can expect a “medical” and “recreational” line. Make sure you stick to the recreational line unless you have a valid medical cannabis card.
There may be menus and special offers on the walls and if you have a smartphone – most pharmacies have online menus too. Lost? Do not worry. Just sit and wait.
As soon as your name or number is called, relax and realize that you are in the company of people who want to help you and find something that works for you. Don’t be afraid to be specific when telling them your needs and tell them it’s your first time! A discount will surely be on the way.
A general location of the country will be your choice of flower, which consists of different varieties and comes in small buds that you break up yourself. You can get a pre-roll, which is bud already rolled up into a small smokable bag. Get a lighter with it.
If smoking isn’t for you…ask about the edibles they have. There is also an option to purchase a vape pen, which also requires you to purchase a charger and cartridge. Most of the people who work in pharmacies are very knowledgeable and can find what you are looking for based on your needs.
One final tip to always keep in mind: sativa strains keep you awake, indica strains make you sleepy, and hybrid is somewhere in the middle.
